A high-impact social project, the Swiss Red Cross Sezione del Sottoceneri organises summer camps for unaccompanied minors.
Every year, a large number of children and young asylum seekers arrive in Ticino. They are often alone and fleeing severe situations of poverty and conflict. The Red Cross – Divisione della Migrazione, offers them a holistic welcome: accommodation in protected spaces, medical care and assistance, basic necessities, and access to school attendance. It is to these same minors, together with other underprivileged youths, that Medacta for Life Foundation sent a present at Christmas, through the initiative “A gift for every child”. The integration of the minors received, however, goes far beyond the basic needs: social interaction, knowledge of the area and insertion into new living contexts are fundamental.
Together with other generous donors, this year Medacta for Life Foundation is once again responding to the call of the Swiss Red Cross Sezione del Sottoceneri for summer activities: when the school calendar leaves free time, the young guests accommodated can continue their path of integration through various leisure, sports, entertainment and study activities, organised by dedicated teams of educators.
In July and August 2023, the Red Cross Sezione del Sottoceneri welcomed 142 unaccompanied minors; the young refugees had the opportunity to participate in summer camps, creative workshops and Italian language courses. They explored the beauty of the area and attended recreational facilities such as swimming lidos and pools, just like their peers and schoolmates. The formula is repeated again this year, with a dramatically increased number of young participants.
The social impact of these activities, according to the Red Cross report, is remarkable:
Promotion of cultural integration: through language courses and recreational activities, young asylum seekers acquire language and cultural skills essential for integration into the local community.
Social inclusion: by participating in community events and activities, young people develop social relationships, reducing isolation and fostering a sense of belonging to their new community.
Personal development and autonomy: educational and recreational activities provide opportunities for personal growth, developing practical skills and increasing participants’ self-esteem.
Support for mental and physical well-being: access to medical care, sports activities and recreational spaces contributes to the physical and mental well-being of young people, promoting healthy and active living.
Enhancement of the territory: by exploring the local area, young people learn to appreciate and respect their surroundings, developing a bond with their new host country.
The initiatives of the Red Cross Sezione del Sottoceneri not only meet the immediate needs of young asylum seekers, but also build bridges to a future of social inclusion and harmony. With the continuous support of donors and volunteers, the Red Cross is still making a difference in the lives of many young people, promoting a more welcoming and inclusive society for all. Hence our continuous support and heartfelt thanks to the entire team of the Red Cross Sezione del Sottoceneri for their valuable and passionate work.
